Asian Braised Short Ribs

This is my take on a great simple Asian-style braised short rib recipe that can be done braising over duration of time or even done in a slow cooker.  The outcome is just wonderful and compliments really well as the main course for supper. My wife loves this as much as much as the braised red wine short ribs I made last month.

Ingredients:

2.5 to 3 lbs bone-in beef short ribs

1 large yellow onion, cut into 1⁄4-inch slices

4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

1 tbsp  five spice powder

1 tsp Szechuan peppercorn

2 cinnamon sticks

4 star anise

1⁄3 cup soy sauce

1⁄3 cup plum wine

1⁄4 cup sesame oil

1⁄3 cup rice wine vinegar or champagne vinegar

3 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp chili garlic paste

2 tbsp ginger (minced)

1 orange (zest and juiced)

1⁄4 cup cane sugar or 6 packets of Truvia

3⁄4 cup water

2 scallions (optional for garnish)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven at 325 F degrees.

2. Season the short ribs with the five spice.

3. Combine soy sauce, plum wine, sesame oil, rice vinegar, chili garlic paste, sugar, water in a bowl and mix ingredients together.  Set aside for later.

4. In a  braising pan over medium heat, add olive oil. Brown the short ribs on all side

5. Transfer short ribs to a plate and set aside.

6. Add more oil to the braising pan if needed. Then add onion and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is soft.

7. Add the wine, deglaze braising pan by scrape up the browned bits. Cook down the wine at medium high heat for about 2 minutes.

8. Add in soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, chili paste, ginger, orange zest, orange juice and sugar mixture.

9. Add in orange juice.

10. Add in star anise and cinnamon sticks.

11. Add in orange zest and ginger. Let the liquid mixture come to a boil on medium high heat and stir occasionally.

12. Put the short ribs set aside from earlier back into the braising pan (spoon liquid mixture on the top of the short rib).

13. Transfer the short ribs into the oven for 2 hours and 30 minutes.

14. Use a gravy fat separator to eliminate the fat off the sauce. Transfer the ribs and sauce to a serving bowl and serve with steamed rice along with some vegetables. Enjoy!
