Shanghai Palace Restaurant (Country Hills Village) Calgary

If you are looking for a great place for Chinese food, you may want to consider trying Shanghai Palace.  They offer Cantonese and Peking Cuisine but the nice thing about this place is they do not use MSG (upon request).  It is one of the main reasons I avoid a lot of Chinese restaurants so it was refreshing to dine at a place that doesn’t use it for a change.  The place offers a nice variety of dishes ranging from appetizers, soups, rice, hot pot, seafood, beef, chicken, pork and noodle entree dishes.

Our meal came with complimentary lotus roots, carrots and pork soup.  Since it was extremely cold out during that night I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off multiple course meals.

A light lean tasting dish of shrimp fried rice that wasn’t greasy or too salty.

A wonderful plate of steam fish topped off with soy sauce and green scallions.

Golden crispy fish and shrimp with tempura batter and duck egg yolk mixed all together.

Stir fried squid with green snap peas in a light garlic sauce.  Yum!

The honey soy garlic chicken  was one of my favorite dishes of the night.  The chicken was cooked to perfection and the meat was moist and juicy while the skin was crispy.

Vermicelli cooked with dried shrimp and served on top of a bed of steamed Chinese vegetables.

Stir fried Vancouver crab is great as long as you do not mind putting in the work to get to the meat.

Sweet and sour pork cutlets mixed in with a bit of caramelized onions.

Braised Beef brisket with turnip in clay pot.  This dish is has really bold flavors and the star anise really stands out in a nice way.

Pros:

– Apparently this spot does not use MSG

– Great variety of dishes on the menu

– Clean restaurant and bathroom

– Friendly and attentive staff

– Wireless internet is available

– Accepts all major credit cards or cash

Cons:

– The place can get crowded on the weekends mostly during the evenings

Conclusion:

Overall, I recommend giving this restaurant a try.  The prices here are reasonable for decent food and service.  Shanghai palace also has a mini buffet setup for during lunch time which may be worth checking out if you are into that.
